Walking Story acknowledges the sovereign peoples of the lands, seas and skies upon which we live and work. We winanga-li/listen/respect the Elders and knowledge keepers, and honour the work of all those that have gone before. We extend that respect to all First Nations people, acknowledging the deep and unbroken connections to Country, and to each other.
Walking Story is an ongoing collaboration between partners Dominique and Samuel Chen, who joined their stories in 2010, on Arrernte Country in the centre of what has recently been called Australia. Together, they have an ever-evolving store of lived experience, research and education, and project-based making, teaching, managing, facilitating and bigger-picture thinking.
Dom is a Gamilaroi woman with over two decades of experience working within the community, arts, education and research sectors, including project and organisational management. She is a practicing artist and researcher, and lectures at Griffith University / Queensland College of Art and Design in the area of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. She is currently undertaking doctoral study at the University of Technology Sydney, exploring urban Aboriginal food growing through a relational and culturally-centred lens.
Sam has a long professional background in environmental management, film-making and teaching, which has seen him working with communities and environments across Australia. He has been nationally and internationally recognised for his film and television work, including independent wildlife productions, and camera work with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Sam has held senior positions within the education system, and with a particular focus on project and place-based learning.
Our interdisciplinary approach allows us the fluidity to explore, share, generate knowledge and celebrate the intersections between art, creativity, environment, Country and community….all the things that we love and value.
Regardless of the means and outcomes, our ‘walking story’ is always about process—about ways of doing that respects and responds to place, people and perspectives. It is always moving, connecting and reciprocating. It is both personal and shared.
